I'm seconding Valerie- he was chosen because of the film he did which was made in Ascoli Piceno, Marche. The Ascolani are exceptionally proud of him and consider him one of their own. Might not make much sense to you or I, but perhaps from a marketing angle it's not a shabby idea- Marche's not a well known region, and Hoffman may make perspective visitors who wouldn't have before, contemplate it.

Viva Le Marche! I saw parts of it on YouTube before it was yanked. The stage he paced is in la mia citta` di Ascoli Piceno. I think they picked Hoffman based on his one film made in Le Marche (many years ago) but a very strange choice given the challenge of reciting one of Italy's most beloved poems to an Italian audience. I'm a great proponent of the beauties of this region, but I don't see how Dustin Hoffman reciting Leopardi really draws much positive attention. Boh!
